State Budget

"UW president is right about education's economic impact," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, Oct. 2.

This editorial concurs with UW System President Kevin Reilly in saying a well funded university is one of Wisconsin's best bets for a strong economic picture in the future.

"Alumni join students to support budget for UW System," Wisconsin Public Radio, Oct. 1.

More than 30,000 UW-Madison alumni joined the leaders of student government from every UW System institution to urge the Legislature to adequately fund the UW System.

"UW Regents ask state to fund tuition for veterans," Daily Cardinal, Oct. 2.

Regents Michael Falbo, Tom Loftus and David Walsh are urging the state Legislature to fully fund the Wisconsin GI Bill, which would grant military veterans full tuition remission at a UW System institution.

"After this budget, fix the process," Editorial, Capital Times, Oct. 2.

Another editorial bemoaning the tardiness of the state's budget; Wisconsin's budget deadline was July 1.

UW System

"Visit puts River Falls campus in spotlight," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Oct. 2.

This week's visit by the UW System Board of Regents to UW-River Falls -- the Board's first in seven years -- will provide the western Wisconsin campus with an opportunity to show the crucial role it is playing in the growth of the St. Croix Valley.

On Campus

"Schools use virtual notices in times of real danger," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 2.

UW-Madison officials have been recognized by the campus community for their quick and wide-reaching notifications of safety concerns in recent weeks.

UW-Madison's public Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and private Morgridge Institute for Research is designed to increase collaboration between campus researchers and private businesses to strengthen Wisconsin's economy; the institutes are expected to be completed by 2010.

"Biochemistry major sees sudden success at UWSP," Stevens Point Journal, Oct. 2.

22 UW-Stevens Point students have already enrolled as Biochemistry majors after the program was approved last April; campus officials hope the addition of the major will provide the rapidly growing bioscience industry in Wisconsin with home-grown talent.

State

"UW-Extension again cut from Walker budget," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 2.

For the fourth time in six years, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is attempting to zero-fund the county's UW-Extension offerings; if this measure is passed, and the Milwaukee County Board does not restore this funding, Milwaukee County will be the only one in Wisconsin without a UW-Extension program.
