State Budget

"UW warns of cutbacks," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 28.

UW System President Kevin Reilly, UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, Regents Colleene Thomas and Thomas Shields and every leader of student government in the UW System all wrote letters to the Legislature's budget conference committee warning them of the damage an underfunded UW System could do to higher education in Wisconsin and to the prospect of a healthy state economy.

UW System officials said this budget season is the first time students, business leaders, alumni, elected officials and working families have all simultaneously called for a renewed investment in the university.

This column touts the tremendous economic impact a strong UW System could have for Wisconsin, and chastises those elected officials who seek to decrease the university's funding.

"Give UW faculty full rights," Editorial, Capital Times, Sept. 27.

This editorial favors allowing UW System faculty and academic staff the choice to collectively bargain.

On Campus

"How UW alerted the campus," Wisconsin State Journal, Sept. 28.

UW-Madison officials kept the campus community informed about a potential safety concern earlier this week by sending mass e-mails, regularly updating the campus website and making postings on social networking websites frequented by students.

UW-Baraboo/Sauk County's new 96-person residence hall will generate and use renewable energy as its only power source.

UW-Stout's "Science, Technology and Engineering Preview at Stout" (STEPS) program is designed to generate early interest in science, technology and engineering among seventh-grade girls in the hopes that interest will carry them into a related academic program when they attend college.

"UW-EC gets lift from global program grant," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Sept. 26.

A new program at UW-Eau Claire seeks to synergize business and education and give students a better understanding of international issues.

"UWSP program offers art involvement in Thailand," Stevens Point Journal, Sept. 28.

A course at UW-Stevens Point provides students with the opportunity to develop course work and artistic opportunities for at-risk Thai children.

"Official returning to UW-Stout," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Sept. 28.

UW-Stout has chosen David Williams as the campus's new vice chancellor for university advancement and marketing; Williams has previously served at UW-Stout as its director of development and alumni services from 1981 to 1990.
