State Budget

"Less babble, more work needed on budget," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, Sept. 18.

This editorial captures the frustration of having an incomplete state budget more than two months after the budget deadline and the sparsely convened meetings of the committee charged with crafting it.

UW-Stout received support from Rep. John Murtha, who called for increased financial aid and other measures that would benefit students, as the state budget process continues.

"University employees give millions to politicians, mostly to Democrats," Daily Cardinal, Sept. 18.

University faculty and staff have increased their political contributions in recent years, and now constitute more than $7 million in donations to federal campaigns.

On Campus

"UWM raises ante on acreage for Innovation Park," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 18.

UW-Milwaukee officials said the ability of the campus to sell land parcels to private industry in the future will help cover the costs of other campus projects; UW-Milwaukee is seeking 83 acres on which to construct an Innovation Park to foster academic research on campus and increase development in Milwaukee.

"Wisconsin private sector on board for Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center," Wisconsin Technology Network, Sept. 15.

Ever since UW-Madison was awarded a $125 million federal grant to start the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, the campus has been inundated with interest from private industry seeking to capitalize on the collaborative efforts being undertaken at the Center.

"UW-M/WC offers opportunities abroad," Marshfield News-Herald, Sept. 18.

Abbreviated study-abroad opportunities are expanding at UW-Marshfield/Wood County, as the college currently offers academic excursions to Argentina, China and a number of other locales.

"Chancellor signs commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," Dunn County News, Sept. 17.

UW-Stout will join a number of other colleges and universities aiming to eventually achieve a neutral carbon footprint and practice more environmentally friendly policies as part of the President's Climate Commitment.
