State Budget

"Legislators fight over grants," Badger Herald, Sept. 11.

UW System officials said almost 5,000 students may not be able to continue their education if the Legislature does not pass a budget soon; these students are depending on the state-funded Wisconsin Higher Education Grant to finance their college expenses.

"Get campaign cash out of budget fight," Editorial, Capital Times, Sept. 10.

This editorial supports a proposal that would prohibit members of the Legislature's Joint Committee on Finance and the legislative Conference Committee from collecting campaign contributions until they have completed their official duties.

Legislators continue to spar over a provision that would allow UW faculty and academic staff to collectively bargain.

The Youth for Understanding program is teaming up with UW-Richland to offer a ten-day English as a Second Language program for Japanese exchange students living in the U.S. this year.

"Catholic students sue UW over fees," Associated Press, Sept. 11.

UW-Madison officials said the campus treats all religiously oriented student groups equally, and that a recently filed lawsuit by one group is "baseless."
