State Budget

"Lawmakers bicker; students wait," Associated Press, Sept. 5.

Thousands of Wisconsin students may have to reconsider their futures if state lawmakers do not come to a budget compromise soon; without a state budget, the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant is left without the necessary funding to help students from lower-income families finance their college expenses.

"Save Bucky, save UW funding," NBC 15, Sept. 4.

The Wisconsin Alumni Association has launched a campaign that urges alumni to encourage their elected representatives to support the UW System in the ongoing budget negotiations.

On Campus

"Technology presence continues to increase," Badger Herald, Sept. 5.

UW-Madison students are more "plugged-in" than ever before, with 77 percent owning laptop computers and 85 percent owning cell phones.

"Governor commends Chancellor Sorensen," Dunn County News, Sept. 4.

UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen was presented a certificate of commendation from Gov. Jim Doyle for his 20 years of service as the leader of the campus.

"Thumbs up," Editorial, Janesville Gazette, Sept. 4.

UW-Whitewater's Small Business Development Center gets a "thumbs up" for its work with the city of Milton to help it grow its economic base and attract more residents and visitors; the Center received a $25,000 grant from UW-Extension to fund the project.

National

"Collegiate credit cards stack the odds," Column, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 5.

This column addresses the ever-increasing practice of credit card companies luring young students in with promotions and gimmicks.
