"Students in financial aid limbo due to uncertain state budget," Fond du Lac Reporter, Aug. 30.

Thousands of UW System students may not be able to afford tuition for the coming year due to an impasse in state budget negotiations that has resulted in uncertainties in the amount of funding the Wisconsin Higher Educational Grant will receive.

"Investment in UW System is money banked for future," Column, Fond du Lac Reporter, Aug. 30.

UW-Fond du Lac Dean Daniel Blankenship shows how a modest investment by the state in the UW System now will inevitably yield huge returns in the future by providing citizens with the education needed to succeed in a knowledge economy and create jobs that will hire them.

"Roessler, Ballweg want GOP to change course on compensation reserve fund," WisPolitics.com, Aug. 29.

Two state legislators have contacted their party's leadership in an effort to get their colleagues to oppose proposed reductions to the comprehensive reserve fund, saying the state should fund it at the same level suggested by the Joint Committee on Finance.

"Budget committee delay irresponsible," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, Aug. 30.

The Legislature's Budget Conference Committee needs to act quickly to set a budget for the state -- which was supposed to have been completed by July 1 -- as so many of Wisconsin's citizens and institutions depend on state funding for success.

The groundbreaking programming presented on Wisconsin Public Radio and Wisconsin Public Television serves the state's citizens well and deserves to be adequately funded by the Legislature.

On Campus

"Gow: UW-L continues to push 'dangerous' growth, plan," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 30.

UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow called the institution "the most cost-effective comprehensive university in the country," and said he and his colleagues will continue to push for a growth plan that would increase diversity on campus and add more students, faculty and staff at no additional cost to taxpayers.

"Chancellor focuses on sustainability," Stevens Point Journal, Aug. 30.

UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell reflected on the success the campus has experienced in the last year and invited faculty and staff to work together to accomplish the campus's present objectives.

"UW trying to get alcohol message across," Capital Times, Aug. 29.

UW-Madison has launched a comprehensive campaign to make students -- particularly first-year students in campus residence halls -- aware about the dangers of high-risk alcohol consumption.

"Vets, UW-L to join forces: Stadium funds top $10 million," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 30.

With $10 million already raised toward a new stadium on the UW-La Crosse campus, area veterans groups recently committed to raising an additional $2 million for the project.

"UW plant not big bay polluter," Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 30.

A study undertaken by the City of Madison found that a power plant located on the UW-Madison campus is not a major source of pollution in nearby Monona Bay.

State

"State needs computer czar," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 30.

This editorial favors the formation of a state information technology agency led by a state chief information officer who would report directly to the Governor as one solution to a series of computer-related challenges the state has faced this year.

National

"Virginia Tech criticized for actions in shooting," New York Times, Aug. 30.
