State Budget

"Strong UW System needed for state economy," Column, La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 29.

Regent Brent Smith urges the state Legislature to provide proper funding for the UW System, as the university is one of the best mechanisms through which Wisconsin can improve its economic position.

"Telfer says state budget is biggest obstacle for UW-W," Janesville Gazette, Aug. 28.

UW-Whitewater is positioned to make tremendous contributions to Wisconsin in the coming years, provided it and other UW System campuses receive adequate funding from the State.

UW System officials said thousands of students may not have enough money to attend classes -- which begin next week -- due to uncertainty over the level of funding for the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant.

The UW System Board of Regents has mandated campuses take steps to curb the ever-rising price of textbooks for their students, and will hear a progress report in December.

"Overcrowded dorms forces many students into lounges," Royal Purple News, Aug. 29.

A 200-bed shortage of residence hall space at UW-Whitewater has forced some students to live in the residence hall lounges; UW-Whitewater is planning on constructing a new residence hall in the near future to remedy this challenge, but is encountering uncertainties about the level of state funding that will be provided for the project.

"Outagamie County OKs studying merit of UWFV land buy," Appleton Post-Crescent, Aug. 29.

UW-Fox Valley Dean Jim Perry said an opportunity to expand the college -- as has recently been presented in the form of potential land purchases -- may never arise again, and urged the Outagamie and Winnebago County Boards to agree to the purchases.

"UW-Rock County holds open house for new center," Beloit Daily News, Aug. 28.

UW-Rock County's recently completed Engineering Center, in collaboration with UW-Platteville, will provide a four-year degree program in engineering for UW-Rock County students.

National

"Universities take steps to prevent the next rampage," U.S. News and World Report, Aug. 29.

The UW System is among several universities nationwide who, in the wake of the shooting at Virginia Tech, are revising their policies to make their campuses safer and serve the needs of their students more effectively.
