State Budget

"State budget impasse directly affects you," Column, Shepherd Express, Aug. 23.

This column explains how the lack of a state budget means that city and county agencies are left unsure about how much funding they will receive, and are thus more cautious when rolling out their own spending plans, and how almost 7,000 Wisconsin students do not know if they will receive state-funded grants to finance their higher education.

On Campus

"Business program at UW-RF earns accreditation," River Falls Journal, Aug. 22.

Heading into its sixth year of classes, the UW-River Falls College of Business and Economics has accomplished its biggest goal so far -- earning accreditation.

"Arts and diversity benefit to be held for former UW-S dean," Sheboygan Press, Aug. 23.

Colleagues and friends of former UW-Sheboygan Dean Ray Hernandez are organizing a fund-raiser so that Hernandez can afford alternative cancer treatments, saying he simply refuses to give up.

"University will honor Xiong's life in event on Sept. 11," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Aug. 23.

The UW-Green Bay community will hold an event to remember Mahalia Xiong, a student who passed away earlier this month.

National

"Virginia Tech issues proposals for security," New York Times, Aug. 23.

Like many colleges and universities, Virginia Tech issued a series of updates to its security policies after a shooting took place on the campus in April; UW System officials and a commission formed by Gov. Jim Doyle and co-chaired by UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard have also undertaken such a review process for Wisconsin's higher education institutions.
