"UW: Course cuts will hurt quality," Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 19.

Reductions to course offerings at UW-Madison -- the result of budget cuts and other challenges -- can create dilemmas for students who come to the campus because of its reputation for wide-ranging coursework and can force some students to remain on campus longer in order to complete degree programs.

UW-Madison officials said an inability to guarantee on-campus housing for first year students -- a challenge unique to UW-Madison among its Big Ten peers -- hinders the campus's ability to recruit top students who are also being sought after by other institutions.

An editorial favoring mandatory ACT testing for high school juniors in the Milwaukee Public School District, saying such a measure would ensure college-ready students will take the test and could encourage more students to prepare for the academic workload waiting for them in college.
