State Budget

"UW is focus of latest skirmish over budget," Associated Press, Aug. 9.

Members of the Legislature's budget conference committee met yesterday to discuss state funding for the UW System; members have made some attempts toward compromise, but one legislator said she doesn't expect a budget to be complete until September.

On Campus

"UWM to run training program," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 13.

UW-Milwaukee's School of Continuing Education will run a local branch of a national non-profit program that trains youth leaders.

"Teaching money magic: UW students learn of Wall Street's wonders," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 13.

This week, Mark J. Ready becomes the fourth director of the Stephen L. Hawk Center for Applied Security Analysis, part of the UW-Madison School of Business; the center provides graduate students hands-on investment opportunities with money from the university's endowment.

"Take it as a sign," River Falls Journal, Aug. 10.

The concept of inclusivity is promoted on new signs welcoming visitors to the city of River Falls and the UW-River Falls campus; the mayor worked with the city's Diversity Committee to obtain the signs as a way to increase racial tolerance and diversity.

State

"Key issue on campus," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Aug. 10.

Gov. Doyle's Task Force on Campus Safety met at UW-Eau Claire to discuss what Wisconsin's colleges and universities can do to update their security policies.

National

"NSF grant-application success rate has declined, but number of proposals has not, report says," Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 13.

According to a recent report, more scientists are applying for National Science Foundation research grants while, at the same time, funding for the program has not increased enough to keep the success rate steady.

"Race (still) matters," Inside Higher Education, Aug. 13.

Social scientist scholars presented findings at the American Sociological Association annual meeting to question the link between decreasing enrollments of minority students to college and the assumption the students therefore lack "merit."
