State Budget

"Budget cuts will hurt state economy," Column, La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 6.

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton calls for increased support for public higher education in Wisconsin, as educating state citizens will lead to a more prosperous state economy.

"Agency: GOP benefit cuts problematic," Capital Times, Aug. 4.

The Department of Employment Trust told state legislators that proposals that would require state employees to pay a portion of their health insurance premiums and pension funds could not only end up costing Wisconsin taxpayers more money, but also could be considered unconstitutional.

"Republican budget pettiness beyond belief," Column, Capital Times, Aug. 3.

A column critical of provisions in the Assembly's proposed state budget, including a $120 million cut to the UW System's state funding.

"Businesses would feel tech college budget cuts," Column, Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 4.

A leader from a Madison-area business discusses the negative effects that and other state firms would experience if a proposed cut to the budget of the Wisconsin Technical College System goes through.

UW System

"Students struggle with tuition," Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 6.

As tuition increases continue throughout the UW System, students from lower-income families, especially first-generation college students, often face challenges in paying for higher education; UW System campuses have several programs in place to assist students with financial needs.

On Campus

"PEOPLE gives students a leg up," Capital Times, Aug. 4.

UW-Madison's PEOPLE program, designed to assist students from traditionally underrepresented groups and from lower-income families achieve academic success, now serves more than 1,200 students from across Wisconsin; 99 percent of students in the program graduate high school, 94 percent attend college and 51 percent attend UW-Madison, where their retention rate is 91 percent.

"UW-Whitewater campus busy with projects," Janesville Gazette, Aug. 4.

Upgrades to UW-Whitewater's University Center comprise only a small portion of the construction and renovation projects occurring on that campus.

"St. Paul's plans dorm, new church," Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 6.

A church near the UW-Madison campus will tear down its two buildings, and replace them with a chapel, student center and residence hall directed at UW-Madison students; this would be the second residence hall near the campus associated with a church.

National

"Bright ideas for tomorrow," Column, Waukesha Freeman, Aug. 4.

U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl urges the public to demand further investigation into alternative energy sources; UW-Madison will soon establish the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center to further the usage of biofuels.
