State Budget

"Wisconsin: Stay tuned to the state budget," Column, Marshfield News-Herald, Aug. 3.

UW Colleges and UW-Extension Chancellor David Wilson discusses how the Assembly's proposed $120 million cut to the UW System's budget would affect the institutions under his direction, and the state as a whole.

"Legislators reach across the divide, approve non-controversial funds," Wisconsin Public Radio, Aug. 2.

The Legislature's budget conference committee signed off on about half of the budget items that will be forwarded to Gov. Doyle; most of these items, however, were not contentious and the committee still must reconcile a $10 billion difference in the proposed budgets from the Senate and Assembly.

UW System

"Plan would raise UW tuition," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 3.

UW System President Kevin Reilly said the university must make tuition decisions now, even though officials are unsure about the level of state funding the university will receive, because the fall semesters is only weeks away; the UW System Board of Regents will consider President Reilly's recommended increase of 5.5 percent at all four-year campuses and tuition freeze at the UW Colleges this coming Tuesday.

On Campus

"Commission approves $2M for UWM planning," Business Journal of Milwaukee, Aug. 2.

UW-Milwaukee will use recently approved state funding to hire consultants to assess the campus's current and future physical needs, and create a master plan that could expand the campus to external sites.

"In pursuit of sustainable communities," Column, River Falls Journal, Aug. 3.

This column addresses UW-River Falls's efforts to become not only energy independent, but also to build a sustainable community in the region surrounding the campus.

"Kids take advantage of UW-S 'College for Kids' program," Sheboygan Press, Aug. 3.

UW-Sheboygan's College for Kids and Middle School University programs are designed to give younger students a taste of the college environment and provide an experience they may not have in their everyday classrooms.

State

"2 firms to study higher education needs in Waukesha County," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 3.

Two consulting firms will soon begin an analysis of Waukesha County's higher education needs in order that the region may take the best course of action with its existing colleges; UW System officials have recommended UW-Waukesha be turned into a university center, where other institutions could offer degree programs at the college, but its original mission would remain the same.
