State Budget

"UW says Assembly budget means big cuts for students who need help most," Wisconsin Public Radio, July 31.

UW Colleges and UW-Extension Chancellor David Wilson said the Assembly's proposed budget for the UW System, which includes a $120 million cut to the university's GPR funding, would severely impact those institutions' ability to serve adult students, first-generation college students and students from lower-income families.

UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell writes that the campus, and the university as a whole, cannot maintain their reputations as high quality educational institutions in the midst of continual budget reductions.

On Campus

Donna Sollenberger, who has served as president and CEO of UW Hospital since 1999, has accepted a position as executive vice president of Baylor College of Medicine and CEO of Baylor Clinic and Hospital, which is scheduled to open in 2010.

"UW friends celebrate Denice Denton legacy," Capital Times, July 31.

The UW-Madison community held a memorial symposium for Denice Denton, a former researcher and teacher at the campus who passed away while serving as chancellor of the University of California at Santa Cruz last year.

State

"State can't ignore flop with Forbes," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Aug. 1.

Wisconsin must work hard to attract high-paying jobs in order to strengthen the state's economy; Forbes Magazine recently ranked Wisconsin 44th on its list of the best states for business.

National

"Getting a university to aim higher," New York Times, Aug. 1.

The president of the University of Kentucky is placing increased emphasis on improving the university's research capacity, saying university research and innovation can grow jobs that will employ highly educated workers, which will help boost the state's economy.

"Certain degrees now cost more at public universities," New York Times, July 29.

UW-Madison is among several public universities across the U.S. that has implemented differential tuition for certain undergraduate programs.
