State Budget

"UW: Proposed cuts would hurt mission," Capital Times, July 25.

Several UW System officials said some of the Assembly's proposed employment reductions within the university would limit its ability to disseminate information and operate with transparency; the state Assembly's proposed budget would cut $120 million in state GPR funding for the UW System.

On Campus

UW-Sheboygan has ramped up its efforts to increase diversity, in part by spreading the message that the college is an affordable option for quality higher education for local residents; the percent of multicultural students at the college has increased in recent years.

"$200,000 approved for UW-M/WC lab renovation," Marshfield News-Herald, July 26.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a request by Rep. Dave Obey for federal funds that will help UW-Marshfield/Wood County renovate its science labs; the renovations will enhance safety and educational opportunities at the college.

"College intrigues the wonder years," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 26.

Middle school students from southeastern Wisconsin are spending a week at UW-Waukesha to get an early glimpse of the college experience; the program was created to help offset cuts to gifted and talented programs at local schools.

National

"Student loan repayment plan worthy," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, July 26.

An editorial recognizing U.S. Rep. Tom Petri for authoring a bill that would make it easier for students from lower-income families to pay back their college loans.
