State Budget

"Reilly: Efficient UW System deserves state support," Column, Wisconsin State Journal, July 22.

UW System Pres. Reilly has found strong support statewide for the university's "Growth Agenda for Wisconsin" and urges state re-investment to preserve core university functions, expand enrollment, and increase the number of college-educated workers competing in a global economy.

"Assembly's proposed budget causes turmoil on some campuses," Wisconsin Public Radio, July 20.

UW-Eau Claire's chancellor expresses concern that the proposed Assembly budget does not provide adequate funding to preserve the quality of the state's public university system or to extend need-based financial aid to students.

"Restore some human service cuts in reconciling the budget," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, July 23.

An editorial recommending that more funding for education be put back in the state budget.

"Incoming freshmen plan for education," La Crosse Tribune, July 24.

Incoming high school freshmen are planning for higher education by signing the Wisconsin Covenant pledge, a program that promises students a spot at a private or public state school if they meet certain academic and non-academic criteria; funding for the program was included in the Senate version of the budget but not in the Assembly version.

"Students may be left paying for veteran's tuition benefits," Wisconsin Public Radio, July 23.

If reimbursement for veteran tuition is not included in the state budget, then other UW students may need to pay higher tuition to cover the cost of the program

"Thumbs Up and Down," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, July 21.

A "thumbs down" is given to Rep. Frank Lasee, R-Bellevue, for including legislation in the Assembly version of the budget withdrawing state money from the UW Law School.

On Campus

The UW Hospital in Madison has opened a state-of-the-art, freestanding children's hospital, which has the dual benefit of providing better care for children while enabling the UW Hospital to serve more adult patients.

This article looks at the factors that come into play when universities compete to hire and retain top faculty.

"Nicer digs on campus," Wisconsin State Journal, July 24.

New dorm rooms in Madison feature amenities such as wireless Internet connections, semi-private baths, and study areas, in part to attract today's top students, who factor in the quality of their living options when deciding where to attend college.
