State Budget

Gov. Jim Doyle continues his travels around the state to discuss Wisconsin's biennial budget, which includes strong emphasis on support for the UW System.

"Legislators urged to keep vets' college perk," Associated Press, July 19.

Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton has joined the call to the state Legislature to honor the original intent of a veterans' tuition remission program, saying Wisconsin's military personnel were there when duty called, and the State should be there for veterans who seek education.

"Senate Democrats and Assembly Republicans prepare for compromise," Wisconsin Public Radio, July 18.

The Legislature's bipartisan budget conference committee likely will not begin its work to craft its version of the budget until next week, according to one member.

On Campus

"Economic development in Valley requires emphasis on quality, equity in education," Dunn County News, July 19.

UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen stressed the need for Wisconsin to have a highly educated citizenry in order for the state to have a bright economic future.

"UW eye doctor gives world better vision," Capital Times, July 19.

Dr. Suresh Chandra, a UW-Madison opthalmology professor, began the Combat Blindness Foundation more than 20 years ago, and the organization has since set up 1,500 "eye camps" in Asia and Africa where volunteer doctors, nurses and staff have screened more than 500,000 patients and performed 100,000 free cataract surgeries.

National

"Minn. board endorses tuition pact with Wisconsin," Associated Press, July 19.

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board of Trustees approved updates to the state's tuition reciprocity agreement with Wisconsin.

"Campus killings spur states to act to protect students (subscription only)," Chronicle of Higher Education, July 19.

Political and educational leaders across the country have been taking different approaches in responding to the Virginia Tech shooting that occurred last April; both the UW System and Gov. Jim Doyle have appointed commissions to study campus safety in Wisconsin.

A UW-Madison study found that, under proposed governmental provisions that would sanction institutions who raise tuition at more than twice the rate of inflation, public higher education institutions would be subject to the sanctions more often than private, often more expensive, colleges and universities.
