State Budget

"Prune bad ideas from state budget," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, July 14.

This editorial calls the state Assembly's underfunding of the UW System and Wisconsin Technical College System "a really bad idea," especially considering Wisconsin's need to prepare its residents for success in the knowledge economy.

"Mr. Speaker, it's about more than cutting taxes," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 15.

This editorial criticizes the state Assembly's budget, mentioning its underfunding of the UW System and, in particular, UW-Milwaukee's inability under this version of the budget to turn itself into an economic engine for Southeastern Wisconsin.

"UW officials and legislators must reach an understanding," Editorial, La Crosse Tribune, July 16.

This editorial calls for increased understanding between UW System officials and state legislators, particularly when the latter group is busy crafting a crucial state budget.

"In budget, grandstanding trumps good policy," Column, Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, July 16.

This editorial warns legislators against pulling funding from Wisconsin Public Television and Wisconsin Public Radio, two of the state's primary institutions for dissemination of Amber Alert information.

"GOP's budget plan slaps UW System," Column, Dubuque Telegraph Herald, July 15.

UW-Platteville Chancellor David Markee expresses concern that a lack of state funding for the UW System will impair the university's ability to remain a world-class educational institution and fuel Wisconsin's economy.

UW System

"Tuition boost at UW may be 6 percent," Wisconsin State Journal, July 14.

Due to uncertainties in the state budget, the UW System Board of Regents will set the university's operating budget and tuition in early August.

The UW System Board of Regents heard highlights from the report of the President's 2007 Commission on University Security, where Commission Chair and UW-Madison Police Chief Sue Riseling presented the group's recommendations for how the UW System can update its campuses' security operations.

On Campus

"UW-L agrees to deal with Pepsi," La Crosse Tribune, July 14.

Proceeds from a deal between UW-La Crosse and a soft drink company will go to a Campus Community Enrichment fund managed by students and campus administrators, and will be set aside for campus improvement projects, according to Chancellor Joe Gow.

National

"Petri introduces bill to cut subsidies," Green Bay Press-Gazette, July 15.

U.S. Reps. Tom Petri and Steve Kagen were among members of the House of Representatives to support a bill that would shift federal funding from the subsidization of private educational lenders to the need-based Pell Grant program and to reduce interest rates on student loans.
