State Budget

"Governor sets budget deadline," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 12.

Gov. Jim Doyle has asked Senate and Assembly leaders to negotiate a compromise budget by Aug. 1, which may be unlikely given the differences between them.

"UW-Madison snubbed; why?" Wisconsin State Journal, July 12.

UW-Madison was one of 14 semifinalists to be the site of a national disease research facility; campus officials would like to know more about why it did not make the latest cut.

"Vendors pay thousands to meet with university officials," Capital Times, July 11.

This article questions whether it is proper for university officials to attend conferences in which vendors pay a fee to the company organizing the event, in return for a set number of one-on-one meetings with campus officials.

"Former UWM student leader charged with theft," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, July 12.

A former UW-Milwaukee student leader has been charged for allegedly taking money intended for student purposes.

State

"Keep door open for biofuel plants," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, July 12.

This editorial urges Wisconsin communities to consider suitable sites for ethanol plants so that Wisconsin can become a leader in biofuel development; UW-Madison recently received a $125 million federal grant to help fund the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, which will examine ways to create new kinds of fuel.

"State TV goes live, but hard to find on local cable," Editorial, Oshkosh Northwesterm, July 12.

Kudos to WisconsinEye and two cable companies for providing television coverage of state politics; a suggested improvement is to make the channel available to more, if not all, cable subscribers.

National

"U.S. House passes bill to cut lender subsidies to pay for Pell Grant increase and other college aid," Chronicle of Higher Education, July 12.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that would drastically reduce federal subsidies to student loan providers in favor of using that money for other types of federal student aid; the U.S. Senate is still working on its version of the legislation.

"House Committee approves increases for Pell and NIH, big cut for Reading First," Chronicle of Higher Education, July 12.

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations passed a bill, similar to one passed by a subcommittee in June, to increase funding for the Pell Grant program and biomedical research.
