"Think tank: UW, system should split," Capital Times, July 5.

A recently released report by the Wisconsin Policy Research Institute analyzes the governing structure of the UW System and makes recommendations that it says will improve efficiency, including the suggestion that UW-Madison have its own governing board; the UW System, which is the eighth largest university system in the country, has been recognized by the Center for National Higher Education Management Systems for its efficiency and productivity when compared to other university systems.

On Campus

"UW-P books growth across board," Dubuque Telegraph-Herald, July 5.

UW-Platteville has been working to increase its capacity to serve southwestern Wisconsin's economic and educational needs; the campus is growing its enrollment through a successful regional work-force initiative, improving its engineering facilities and other buildings, and recently received the highest re-accreditation possible by the Higher Learning Commission and the Accrediting Board of Engineering & Technology.

UW-Marathon County received a nearly $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to train local history teachers.

"UWSP bank deal draws fire," Stevens Point Journal, July 6.

In 2005, UW-Stevens Point signed a contract with US Bank for student ID cards that could double as a US Bank debit card; some students appreciate the convenience, while others say that the Associated Student Government was not adequately involved in the decision-making process.

"Valley downloader finds the blues," Appleton Post-Crescent, July 6.

A UW-Whitewater student received a subpoena from the Recording Industry Association of America; she was one of 66 UW System students accused of illegally sharing music files online by the RIAA.

About 500 students planning to attend UW-Stevens Point are on a waiting list for need-based financial aid from the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant program that may affect their ability to attend the university; funds needed to support the program are in doubt.

"UW-Fox Valley seeks $1.73 million to buy adjacent land," Appleton Post-Crescent, July 5.

Campus CEO/Dean Jim Perry is requesting that Outagamie and Winnebago counties purchase two properties to ease space and parking limitations at the land-locked campus.

"UWMC science building receives $3.4M makeover," Wausau Daily Herald, July 5.

The science department at UW-Marathon County was renovated over the summer for the first time since its construction in 1968; Dean Jim Veninga said many students continue on in the sciences and pharmacy after graduating from UWMC.

"ROTC to develop program with UW-River Falls," Marshfield News-Herald, July 5.

A Reserve Officer Training Corps program begun at UW-Stout two years ago is now expanding to UW-River Falls; the expansion to campuses in the western part of the state was begun by Maj. Ed Ripp, who led the military science department at UW-Stevens Point from 2003 to 2005.

Gov. Jim Doyle's "Declaration of Energy Independence" could position the state to be a leader in renewable energy and generate thousands of jobs; the UW-Madison Solar Energy Lab is playing a part by helping to construct a solar collector testing facility, the second to be built in the country.
