"Conduct code targets student loan practices," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 8.

A Regents committee passed a proposed new policy that seeks to eliminate conflicts of interest between UW System financial aid employees and private educational lenders; the policy is expected to be passed by the full board today, and is similar to measures being considered at the federal level.

"UWM engineering plan urged," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 8.

In a presentation to the UW System Board of Regents, UW-Milwaukee's chancellor advocated for a campus expansion plan, one that would include an engineering campus, as a vitally important way to help southeastern Wisconsin's economy.

The Joint Finance Committee's decision to pass a budget worth nearly $150 million for UW System programs may indicate common ground for legislators of both political parties -- that the entire state benefits from a quality university system at an affordable price to students.

Addressing a statewide shortage of nurses, Wisconsin lawmakers voted to support a program that will help several university campuses increase nursing education opportunities and nursing faculty.

State Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton discussed the Wisconsin Covenant plan with Milwaukee-area junior high students; the proposed plan guarantees students a spot in a state college or university if they meet certain academic and nonacademic criteria.

Pell grant maximums would increase significantly under legislation approved Thursday by the House of Representatives.
