This editorial argues that the state Legislature should come up with creative ways to ensure UW System professors are paid salaries that are competitive with their peers at other institutions in order to maintain the campus's world-class standing.

An annual trip brings UW-Madison faculty and staff to communities around Wisconsin to see how the campus contributes to the state's success in agriculture, education, and business.

"Debate rages over UW stem-cell patents," Wisconsin State Journal, June 1.

Representatives from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation said they are confident that the foundation's stem-cell patents, which were rejected by the U.S. Patent Office in March and are currently under review, will remain in tact; WARF still holds the rights to these patents until a final decision is made.

High school students now have free and unlimited access to the resources at UW-River Falls's Chalmer Davee Library, thanks to a partnership between the campus and 25 area school districts.

UW-Madison continues to explore how a campus power plant could burn coal in a cleaner way, according to Chancellor John Wiley.

National

"Columbia U. and financial-aid administrators' group agree to settlements in student-loan inquiry," Chronicle of Higher Education, June 1.

Financial aid officers at Columbia University will follow a code of conduct proposed by New York's Attorney General, and the national association will forgo sponsorships from student-loan companies. (subscription required)
