Gov. Jim Doyle called on the state Legislature to make a significant reinvestment in the UW System to allow for increased enrollment, easier retention of star faculty, the full coverage of the university's operating costs and more college graduates for a stronger Wisconsin economy.

"More IT monitoring urged," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 31.

The state Legislature's budget committee approved updates to the way the Department of Administration monitors state computer projects, including new policies for all state agencies that begin information technology projects costing more than $1 million.

"How much does a promise cost? $139 million," Hudson Star-Observer, May 30.

Gov. Jim Doyle's administration estimates that costs to fund the Wisconsin Covenant will paid for over the next eight years and said the program will provide access to higher education for a greater number of state students.

"Spitzer names a panel to improve universities in New York," New York Times, May 30.

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer said the goal of a recently formed commission to overhaul the state's public universities is to bring them on-par with those like the highly revered University of Wisconsin.

"Americans hold positive views about colleges, but question their costs and operations, survey finds," Chronicle of Higher Education, May 31.

A national survey by two independent nonprofit research groups shows that 50 percent of respondents said college is necessary to achieving success, up from 31 percent in 2000, and that about two-thirds of respondents said colleges and universities were teaching students what they need to know.
