"UW sees brain drain due to low pay," Associated Press, May 29.

UW-Madison professors and researchers are more often leaving for other institutions, sometimes taking grant funding and staff members with them; the university is asking the state Legislature for additional funding to retain star employees and to boost faculty salaries so they are competitive with other colleges and universities.

"Students dive into summer classes," Stevens Point Journal, May 30.

An estimated 1,800 students will take part in summer-session classes at UW-Stevens Point this year; some say they hope to get ahead on degree requirements, while others prefer the smaller class sizes and individualized attention.

"Milwaukee area must be 'design shop of the world'," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 30.

A new engineering school and research campus at UW-Milwaukee is endorsed by the Milwaukee 7 as one way that the southeastern Wisconsin region can compete in a global economy.

Wisconsin Technical College President Dan Clancy writes that Wisconsin's technical colleges are preparing graduates for jobs in Wisconsin's thriving manufacturing sector.

National

"The prospective (foreign) student," Inside Higher Ed, May 30.

Results from a survey of 28,000 prospective international students worldwide showed that the majority chose international study as a means to increase career opportunities abroad and better prepare for future careers in their home countries.

Colleges and universities are stepping up efforts to help eliminate achievement gaps between minority and white students; two successful programs find that intensive mentoring and other support encourages high academic performance among minority or disadvantaged undergraduates.
