Rebecca Martin has been named UW System Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; Martin had been in the position on an interim basis since January.

"Regents name new student representative," Capital Times, May 19.

Colleene Thomas, an undergraduate at UW-Madison, will replace Christopher Semenas as one student representative on the UW System Board of Regents.

On Campus

"UW grad overcomes major obstacles for degree," Channel3000.com, May 21.

Mike Hinrichs walked across the Kohl Center stage Sunday, with dog Patches in tow, to receive his UW-Madison degree in social work; Hinrichs lost his vision in 1999 and Patches has been with him every step of his collegiate journey.

Among this years UW-Sheboygan graduates are the first to earn their bachelor's degrees through a collaborative program that includes UW-Sheboygan, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Manitowoc, and Lakeshore Technical College.

UW-Madison's Legal Educational Opportunities program, which connects law students of color and alumni, is no longer limited to recruitment and has helped make the campus a nationally recognized leader in law school diversity.

This editorial lauds UW-Madison for creating the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center, a virtual center that will foster communication and collaboration among UW faculty working in the field.

Advocates say the National Bio- and Agro-Defense Lab, a federal facility being considered for southern Wisconsin because of the proximity to UW-Madison, would help the state's agricultural industry and create hundreds of jobs for Wisconsin residents.

An interview with UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, who has been with the campus in various roles since the 1960s.

UW-Stout Chancellor Charles Sorensen said he and the campus's athletic director, who recently tendered his resignation, had differed on how to run the campus's athletic department for a number of years.

UW-Milwaukee is seeking greater oversight for its student government following allegations of embezzlement.

"Some UW royalties to help workers," Capital Times, May 19.

UW-Madison officials said the campus would donate a portion of the royalties it receives from one of its apparel licensees to workers at one factory where the apparel was formerly produced.

"Focus covenant on low-income," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, May 19.

This editorial suggests that Gov. Jim Doyle should focus on expanding educational opportunities for students from lower-income families when trying to garner legislative and public support for the Wisconsin Covenant.
