A UW System committee is gathering input about potential changes to chapters of the Wisconsin Administrative Code related to sanctions for misconduct; UW-Milwaukee has said it wants to be able to impose sanctions for "egregious or chronic negative conduct" that students may commit off-campus.

On Campus

"Chancellor calls for a culture of risk at UWM," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 9.

Chancellor Carlos Santiago said an "entrepreneurial spirit" can transform UW-Milwaukee into a multi-campus university that will be integral to the state's economy.

"Funding not enough to keep best TAs, school says," Wisconsin Public Radio, May 8.

UW-Madison is concerned that a shortfall in state funding will affect its ability to recruit top graduate students who serve as valuable teaching and research assistants.

An editorial supporting the Sierra Club's rights to continue a lawsuit against the State of Wisconsin and UW-Madison regarding a power plant near the campus.

With funding approval, UW-Washington County could start construction next year to finish science facilities that would support four-year degrees in engineering and health technology.

"8th-graders offered 'Covenant'," Wausau Daily Herald, May 9.

Beginning Thursday, eighth graders across the state will have the opportunity to sign up for the Wisconsin Covenant, a program wherein participating students who meet certain academic and nonacademic standards will be guaranteed admission to a Wisconsin college or university.

State Sen. Robert Cowles vows to ensure the Legislature implements recommendations made after an audit of the state's information technology projects.

National

"College spending plan joins budget merry-go-round," Associated Press, May 9.

A bill approved by both houses of Minnesota's Legislature would provide an additional $3.16 billion to the state's higher education institutions to, among other measures, keep tuition increases minimal and bolster financial aid programs.

"Challenges face first-generation students," National Public Radio, May 9.

A Missouri community college has implemented a support program for first-generation college students attending the institution.
