"UWM discipline could grow," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, May 8.

A UW System committee is gathering input about potential changes to chapters of the Wisconsin Administrative Code related to sanctions for misconduct; UW-Milwaukee representatives testified Monday that the campus wants to be able to punish students for "egregious or chronic negative conduct" that may be committed off-campus; the UW-Milwaukee Student Senate already approved a resolution opposing such a move.

On Campus

"Faculty vote to check records," Badger Herald, May 8.

The UW-Madison Faculty Senate endorsed a resolution that would require the campus to conduct background checks on all new employees and present employees moving into "positions of trust."

"Provost hopefuls to visit campus, host forums," Stevens Point Journal, May 8.

The four finalists for UW-Stevens Point provost will visit the campus and make presentations to students, faculty, staff and the public.

"Parkside agrees with Doyle plans," Kenosha News, May 4.

Chancellor Jack Keating is confident in UW-Parkside's current emergency response plans, and welcomes Gov. Jim Doyle's move to create a statewide task force to make recommendations about security procedures and mental health services at public and private campuses. Full story not available online.

"UW-Whitewater says former dean still owes $117,000," Associated Press, May 7.

UW-Whitewater said it has renewed its order that former campus dean Howard Ross reimburse the campus for funds he allegedly misspent.

"UWSP environmental leader to retire," Stevens Point Journal, May 8.

Larry Beck, who will retire from UW-Stevens Point in June after 16 years as the campus's facilities planner, has been instrumental in making the campus more energy efficient.

"Former acting UW-Parkside chancellor is a real mover," Racine Journal Times, May 6.

Gordon Lamb, who served as acting chancellor at UW-Parkside, has taken many interim chancellorships since his official "retirement," the latest of which is at the University of Missouri System, where he currently serves as interim president. Full story not available online.

State

"U.S. lab is good fit for Dane County," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, May 8.

Most of Dane County would welcome placement of a federally funded National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility in the area, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security should take into consideration UW-Madison's world-class status in biotechnology research when making its placement decision.

"Doyle promotes covenant," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, May 7.

Under the Wisconsin Covenant proposed by Gov. Jim Doyle, state students who meet certain academic and nonacademic criteria will be guaranteed admission to a Wisconsin college or university; Thursday marks the first day eighth-graders can sign up for the Covenant.
