UW System President Kevin Reilly is moving forward with university plans to assess campus safety in the wake of the shootings at Virginia Tech; UW-Madison Police Chief Sue Riseling will lead a systemwide university safety commission.

"UWSP to expand in Wausau," Stevens Point Journal, April 25.

UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell said expanding UWSP's role in nearby Wausau will establish a permanent teaching and meeting space in the city and would not duplicate services already offered to the community by UW-Marathon County.

"Higher-education hurdles tougher to clear for first-generation college students," Green Bay Press-Gazette, April 25.

UW-Green Bay officials said the campus's first-generation students experience fewer challenges than their peers at other institutions; other northeast Wisconsin higher education officials said these students often do not even know what questions to ask when discussing their education, and have put programs in place specifically to assist them.

The Dane County Board's Zoning and Land Regulation Committee approved a resolution opposing a UW-Madison proposal to construct an animal disease research facility in a town outside of Madison, citing land-use concerns.

National

The federal government is putting together a group to examine ties and possible conflicts of interest between university financial aid officials and private loan companies; UW System President Kevin Reilly has already called for a review of the university's financial aid practices.

"Ex-chancellor Ward pushes campus safety," Capital Times, April 24.

Former UW-Madison Chancellor David Ward, who currently serves as president of the American Council on Education, joined other higher education officials in calling for the creation of a national center for campus public safety, which would help local officials work with national law enforcement to establish campus safety programs.
