"Chancellor Shepard decides to remain at UWGB," Green Bay Press-Gazette, April 10.

UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard said he wants to see the campus's growth agenda and Phuture Phoenix programs through to fruition, and has therefore withdrawn his name from consideration for the presidency at Western Michigan University.

"UWMC names next dean," Wausau Daily Herald, April 10.

UW Colleges and UW-Extension Chancellor David Wilson names Sandra Smith as the next dean at UW-Marathon County; Smith, the first female dean in the college's history, will replace Jim Veninga, who is stepping down in August and, after a sabbatical, will teach religious studies full-time at the college.

"Tallant named permanent provost," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, April 10.

Steven Tallant, who had been serving as acting provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at UW-Eau Claire for two years, was chosen from four finalists for the permanent position.

National

"College-lender relationships aren't in students' interest," Editorial, Appleton Post-Crescent, April 10.

An editorial lending support to UW System President Kevin Reilly's call for a review of university student loan practices and to Rep. Tom Petri's reform bill that would give colleges and universities across the country incentive to provide loans directly to students from the federal government instead of through private financial organizations.

Among other suggestions, authors of a new report on adult college students said colleges and universities should incorporate for-credit coursework into work-training programs so job-skills courses can also count toward a college degree.

"Senate returns to stem-cell debate today," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, April 10.

After a Spring recess, members of the U.S. Senate will resume discussion on two bills regarding the federal funding of stem-cell research; UW-Madison supports a bill sponsored by Sen. Harry Reid which would lift President Bush's funding restrictions on such research.
