"Domestic partner benefits unlikely in UW System," Stevens Point Journal, March 29.

A lack of domestic partner benefits is negatively affecting the university's ability to recruit and retain valuable faculty and staff; while many Wisconsin businesses offer such benefits, UW-Madison, for example, remains the only Big Ten institution not to offer the benefits; a provision to offer domestic partner benefits may not remain in the final state budget bill.

This editorial endorses the idea to levy university sanctions for nonacademic misbehavior on the part of UW System students.

Students and staff at UW-Whitewater say it would be difficult to replace Chancellor Martha Saunders, who has been named the sole finalist for the presidency of the University of Southern Mississippi.

More than 60 percent of UW-Madison students who participated in a Spring 2006 survey say they are "extremely satisfied" with their campus experience, a more than 20-point increase from a decade ago.

High school counselors say they tell students who want to be accepted to UW-Madison to be well-prepared in terms of academic achievement and extracurricular participation.

State

"State computer debacles draw more scrutiny," Wisconsin State Journal, March 29.

State Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch appointed a special task force to look into failed and ultimately abandoned state-related information technology projects; the task force will be expected to find ways to prevent such challenges and hold state agencies accountable in the future.

"State must confront brain drain issue," Column, Badger Herald, March 29.

The state must make a concerted effort to attract knowledge-economy jobs to Wisconsin to attract college graduates from outside the state.
