Gov. Jim Doyle announced a number of funding proposals directed at the Milwaukee area, including several that would help UW-Milwaukee build a new engineering campus and School of Public Health; campus officials say these projects would create a critical mass for research in downtown Milwaukee.

A second UW-Eau Claire student has died following a traffic accident on Friday near Macon, Ga. in which an airborne tire from a semi-trailer struck a van carrying five UW-Eau Claire students and one other passenger.

Richard Stewart, director of UW-Superior's Transportation and Logistics Research Center, has been studying ways to create a specialized shipping terminal to handle shipping containers in the Twin Ports.

UW-Madison officials said it will not involve itself in any legal actions taken by the Recording Industry Association of America against campus network users accused of piracy.

National

"NIH director calls for loosening Bush's restrictions on funds for stem-cell research," Chronicle of Higher Education, March 20.

The director of the National Institutes of Health recommended Congress relax restrictions placed on stem-cell research funding, as such restrictions are hindering progress in the field and threaten to slow the pace of advances in cancer and other medical research.
