UW System Board of Regents President David Walsh commended UW System President Kevin Reilly for ending a problematic computer software project; a recent report found that Regents were not kept up-to-date on the project as it was in progress.

On Campus

"Polytechnic label suits UW-Stout," Column, Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, March 4.

The UW System Board of Regents should embrace UW-Stout's proposal to be branded as Wisconsin's polytechnic university; the official branding would help the campus recruit students and faculty and is a good match for the campus's mission.

"UW-Oshkosh makes considerable community contributions," Editorial, Advance Titan, March 5.

UW-Oshkosh makes a significant economic impact on its surrounding community and is working to increase the number of residents who have four-year college degrees; volunteering is one way students also strive to give back to the Oshkosh region.

"UW-Stout team's recycling design makes finals," Eau Claire Leader Telegram, March 5.

A composting system designed by three UW-Stout students is one of 10 finalists in the Ecomagination Challenge, a national competition seeking innovative and practical plans for improving campus sustainability; if the students' design wins, UW-Stout will receive a $25,000 grant to put the idea into practice.

The UW-Madison campus community continues to discuss controversial comments allegedly made by a UW-Madison law professor; the professor said he is preparing a written statement giving his interpretation of the events.

"UWSP students, staff members cry foul over art selection committee," Stevens Point Journal, March 3.

UW-Stevens Point students are seeking representation on the selection committee for the art that will be commissioned for the campus's Dreyfus University Center, which is currently undergoing a renovation and expansion.

"Students try freezing themselves for tuition statement," Greater Milwaukee Today, March 2.

Some UW-Waukesha students planned a campaign for lowered tuition costs by spending a night in the frigid conditions outside the college's student commons.

"Land lines removed from dorms, savings used for upgrades," Spectator, March 5.

UW-Eau Claire will provide residence hall rooms with new chairs and upgrade the campus's network using money saved by removing telephone lines from residence halls.

State

"States reconsidering reciprocity agreement for college tuition," La Crosse Tribune, March 4.

Higher education officials and legislators from Wisconsin and Minnesota continue to grapple with differences in the execution of the states' tuition reciprocity agreement.

National

"Student Aid Reward Act equalizes access," Column, Daily Cardinal, March 5.

The passage of the Student Aid Reward Act, which would provide incentives for colleges and universities that offer direct loans to students in need, would increase the number of students who could afford to seek higher education and save the government money.
