"UW profs offered right to negotiate," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Feb. 15.

Gov. Jim Doyle said a provision in his budget would offer UW System faculty and academic staff the chance to choose whether they want collective bargaining rights.

"Nass wants ruling on race," Badger Herald, Feb. 16.

Wisconsin Reps. Steve Nass and Scott Suder and State Sen. Glenn Grothman plan to ask Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen to issue an opinion on the legality of recent updates to the university's admissions policies.

On Campus

"UWO contributes $500 million to local economy," Oshkosh Northwestern, Feb. 16.

UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells said the campus has demonstrated that it is not only a vital piece of Oshkosh's economy, but provides four-year college degree-holders to the region.

"Hitch leaving for Utah college," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 16.

UW-La Crosse Provost Elizabeth Hitch, who served as interim chancellor until January, will leave the campus to become vice president of academic affairs at Utah Valley State College; Hitch will begin her new position on July 1.

"UW unveils growth plan," Stevens Point Journal, Feb. 16.

UW-Stevens Point would see a new student services building and residence hall as part of a Master Plan proposed to guide the campus's physical growth.

"UW names Berquam as permanent dean," Badger Herald, Feb. 16.

Newly appointed UW-Madison Dean of Students Lori Berquam said top priorities will be campus safety, diversity and providing support services for students.

"Class size on rise at UW-P," Exponent, Feb. 14.

Increased enrollment at UW-Platteville means many classes are filled to capacity, placing a strain on classroom resources available to students.

"USA Today honors UW-EC student on list of top scholars," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Feb. 15.

UW-Eau Claire senior Lori Scardino, one of the 20 students selected as USA TODAY's All-USA College Academic First Team, was able to achieve an elite level of lab skill in an extremely short amount of time, according to one academic advisor; Scardino, a single mother of two, will graduate in May with degrees in chemistry and biology.

State

"Let state insure domestic partners," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Feb. 16.

Wisconsin should provide health care benefits for all state employees and their domestic partners, a practice that is already commonplace among the state's private industry; UW System campuses will continue to lose quality faculty and staff without these benefits, as, for example, UW-Madison is the only school in the Big Ten to not insure domestic partners.

Students seeking four-year college degrees could see greater access to higher education under a plan that would ease the transition from Wisconsin Technical College System institutions to UW System campuses.
