"Nass: Proposed UW admissions policy may be illegal," Wisconsin State Journal, Feb. 6.

Responding to a letter from Rep. Steve Nass, UW System Board of Regents President David G. Walsh said as long as the university complies with a 2003 Supreme Court ruling, it may legally consider race as one factor among many when making admissions decisions.

UW-Parkside's extensive community involvement has earned it a Carnegie Foundation "Community Engagement" classification.

UW System officials are reviewing cost projections and formulating recommendations for the future of UW-Waukesha; some in the state wish to see the institution merged with UW-Milwaukee.

"UW to train ship builders," Wisconsin Public Radio, Feb. 5.

The U.S. Navy chose UW-Marinette to teach students using new software, making the college one of just two institutions in the nation to offer these courses.

"Up for the challenge," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Feb. 6.

Despite having several disabilities, UW-Stout senior Cassy Bourget has forged ahead, and will graduate with a business degree in December.

State

"Biofuels industry offers opportunities, risks for state, farmers," Editorial, Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter, Feb. 4.

The state is encouraged to take advantage of the UW System's research facilities as Wisconsin seeks to expand its use of renewable fuels.

"Renew angel tax credit," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Feb. 6.

Gov. Jim Doyle is urged to expand tax credits for venture capitalists who invest in the state's business start-ups, including those that spin-off from academic discovery.

National

"Bush would pay for Pell Grant increase with cuts in lender subsidies and supplemental grants program," Chronicle of Higher Education, Feb. 6.

President Bush has proposed covering the additional costs needed to fund increased maximum Pell Grant awards by, among other measures, eliminating a supplemental grant program originally designed to augment Pell Grants for students from lower-income families.
