A UW-Oshkosh professor answers a column about proposed changes to UW System admissions policies, stressing that academic achievement should be primary, but poverty and race should not be ignored.

"Collegial approach to tech management employed in higher education," Wisconsin Technology Network, Feb. 2.

Ed Meachen, the UW System associate vice president of learning and information technology, says in this profile that one university goal is to increase virtual course access to make higher education more available for nontraditional students.

On Campus

"Doyle says UW-L growth plan is in his budget request," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 3.

Gov. Jim Doyle said he supports a growth and access plan for UW-La Crosse, intended to increase access to the campus and provide high-quality education without using additional state dollars.

"Many students cannot get major they want at UW," Wisconsin State Journal, Feb. 4.

Fewer campus resources in recent years have limited UW-Madison's ability to expand higher-demand major programs, leaving many students to pursue alternative paths to a degree.

"UWSP is a campus for all of central Wisconsin," Column, Stevens Point Journal, Feb. 2.

UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell shares her goals for the future and discusses the mutual benefits for UW-Stevens Point and central Wisconsin.

"UW-Sheboygan to get more 4-year degrees," Sheboygan Press, Feb. 4.

To provide more higher education options for working adults, UW-Sheboygan will collaborate with other campuses to expand its four-year degree programs and create greater flexibility in offering classes.

"Ad gives teen Super Bowl-size stage," Associated Press, Feb. 4.

A student who now attends UW-Stevens Point won a nationwide competition to design a 30-second commercial for Chevrolet; the ad aired during the Super Bowl and will continue to air throughout the year.

"Fraternity house busted at UW-Stout," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Feb. 5.

UW-Stout officials said a campus decision to suspend a greek organization stems from efforts to reduce underage drinking in the area.

Roger Hirst was 77 when he received his bachelor's degree through a UW-Green Bay extended degree program.

State

"?Covenant? would guarantee students spot in state college," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 3.

Gov. Jim Doyle continued his statewide quest to promote the Wisconsin Covenant, which would provide space and financial aid for Wisconsin students who maintain certain academic and nonacademic standards throughout high school.

"Tuition dispute not just about U," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Feb. 4.

Campuses and colleges outside of the UW System and University of Minnesota also have a stake in the current inter-state disagreement over reciprocal tuition, a long-standing program that could disappear if the two states fail to resolve differences over the issue.
