A UW-Oshkosh economics professor suggests that taking race into account when making college admissions decisions has proved successful in the past, but colleges should now shift focus to socioeconomic status.

The recently proposed NanoSTEM initiative would support nanotechnology efforts in the Chippewa Valley by developing a closer partnership between UW-Stout, UW-Eau Claire and the Chippewa Valley Technical College as a means to share information and equipment in the field.

UW-Marathon County hosted a member of Gov. Jim Doyle's administration to answer questions about the governor's State of the State Address; topics included the Wisconsin Covenant.

An in-depth look at the forthcoming Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery -- two UW-Madison facilities, one for privately funded projects and one for publicly funded projects affiliated with the university -- which officials say will enhance Wisconsin's stellar reputation for interdisciplinary research.

"UW-L students seek delay on intoxication ordinance," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 1.

Members of the UW-La Crosse Student Association expressed concern over the city's proposed public intoxication ordinance, which would levy a $222 fine for any person found to be impaired as a result of the use of alcohol, saying city officials fail to adequately address the vague nature of the ordinance.

UW-Madison's PEOPLE program, which partners the campus with a number of public school districts around Wisconsin, guides high school students from traditionally underrepresented groups along the path toward earning a four-year college degree.

An editorial applauding the efforts of UW-Marshfield/Wood County to promote sexual responsibility among its students.

"Stout participates in recycling contest," Dunn County Connect, Feb. 1.

UW-Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Marinette and UW-River Falls are all participating in RecycleMania, a friendly competition among more than 200 campuses around the country to see which can collect the largest amount of recyclable goods and the least amount of trash.

"City, UWSP happy with partnership," Stevens Point Journal, Feb. 1.

UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell presented the city with a check for municipal services received in 2006 and commended the city's police department's sensitivity to student issues.
