State of the State

"Doyle offers agenda for health care, UW System," Wisconsin State Journal, Jan. 31.

During his State of the State Address Tuesday night, Gov. Jim Doyle said he will call for $225 million for the UW System in the next biennium to fund a package of initiatives that includes graduating more nurses, engineers and teachers; Doyle also reiterated plans to fully fund the Wisconsin Covenant, to cover tuition for qualified students who earn good grades in high school.

"Reciprocal tuition helps both states," Editorial, Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Jan. 31.

Editorials examining Minnesota's move to ask for changes to the current tuition reciprocity agreement with Wisconsin, including concerns that Minnesota's universities do not directly receive funds from the agreement.

A column arguing that a "holistic" admissions process, such as the one the UW System wishes to adopt at all campuses, places unrealistic expectations on students to achieve both in and out of the classroom.

On Campus

"Public health school's site discussed," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 31.

UW-Milwaukee and Aurora Health Care have discussed details of forging a partnership, in part to house a forthcoming school of public health in downtown Milwaukee.

"A boost to business," Editorial, Daily Cardinal, Jan. 31.

An editorial supporting a proposed tuition increase for students at UW-Madison's School of Business; the purposes behind the increase -- to enable the school to recruit and retain world-class faculty, and provide greater student financial aid -- are valuable enough to warrant the differential tuition.

"Program docks at Marinette," Badger Herald, Jan. 31.

UW-Marinette students will have opportunities to learn marine design as part of a $4 million federal contract with the National Shipbuilding Research Program.

State

"A tool for development," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 31.

An editorial calling for renewed state funding for the Biomedical Technology Alliance, which has helped create research opportunities at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Parkside and other colleges and universities in southeastern Wisconsin.

National

"4 campuses win awards recognizing innovation in international education," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 31.

UW-Eau Claire is among the campuses to earn an honorable mention from the Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education, which recognize campuses for making international opportunities available for students.
