"Admissions guidelines may include race," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Jan. 30.

At a public forum Monday night, UW System leaders reminded a statewide audience that academic factors are the most important criteria in determining whether to admit applicants to UW campuses, but said campuses should also be able to consider a variety of nonacademic factors, including race or ethnicity; campuses note that all students who are admitted to UW campuses are qualified and that admissions practices already reflect the intent of the updated policy.

Potential updates to the UW System's admissions policy would consider each applicant as a whole person with a potential for success represented by more than just test scores and GPA; supporters of the policy as proposed included students, parents and alumni; others say considerations for admissions should not include race or ethnicity.

The Board of Regents welcomed feedback about an updated admissions policy from a statewide audience that included students, alumni, and members of the public who testified about what they see as the merits and potential problems with the policy.

State Sen. Judy Robson endorses the UW System's "Growth Agenda for Wisconsin," as well as proposed updates to UW admissions policy, calling the university a "pathway to success" for Wisconsin's residents.

On Campus

"UWSP provost proud of her online, faculty support efforts," Stevens Point Journal, Jan. 30.

Since 2002, UW-Stevens Point Provost Virginia Helm has helped the campus more than double the number of online courses it offers, and has helped improve advising capabilities of UW-Stevens Point faculty; Helm is set to retire at the end of the semester.

"UW-Baraboo committee works on plans for 'green' dorm," Baraboo News Republic, Jan. 30.

Members of a UW-Baraboo/Sauk County committee brainstormed the best possible ways to construct the college's Living and Learning Center, a residence hall the committee said would ideally be energy self-sufficient.

"UWO professors find cheap alternatives to textbooks," Oshkosh Northwestern, Jan. 30.

To ease the financial burden for many college students, two UW-Oshkosh professors provide needed literary resources to their students without requiring them to purchase textbooks.

"UW-Stout 'green' project is one of country's best," Dunn County Connect, Jan. 30.

A system designed by UW-Stout students that converts the campus's 50 tons of annual food waste into an organic soil placed among the top ten in the mtvU/GE Ecomagination Challenge.

State

"Here's the speech we'd like to hear," Editorial, Wisconsin State Journal, Jan. 30.

According to this editorial, an ideal State of the State Address would include strong support for the UW System and its plan to attract and graduate more four-year college degree-holders.

"MATC a tuition value," Column, Wisconsin State Journal, Jan. 30.

Madison Area Technical College President Bettsey Barhorst promotes transferring to a UW campus from a technical college as one way students can save money and receive a quality college education

"New initiative set to spur entrepreneurial growth," Dunn County Connect, Jan. 30.

The Wisconsin Entrepreneurs Network, a partnership between UW-Extension and the state Department of Commerce, announced its Wisconsin Idea-Link program, in which WEN will provide competitive grants to entrepreneurs to evaluate and market potential projects.

National

"Democratic leaders in Congress propose increases for scientific research and Pell Grants in 2007 budget," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 30.

A plan to increase need-based Pell Grants would raise the maximum award by 6 percent, to $4,310; the current maximum has remained the same for four years, despite inflation and general cost-of-living increases nationwide.
