An editorial praising the work of UW-La Crosse's Elizabeth Hitch, who has been a strong and effective advocate for UW-La Crosse during her tenure as interim chancellor.

"Wiley: Race matters," Badger Herald, Jan. 25.

UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley, favoring the UW System's proposed admissions-policy updates, said colleges should consider race as one factor among many in admissions because race plays a significant role in a person's life overall.

"UW-Eau Claire seeks nanotechnology funding," The Spectator, Jan. 25.

Support for UW-Eau Claire's nanotechnology initiatives would improve the campus's math and science courses, as well as the ability to hire faculty and academic staff.

"Carnegie group praises Parkside," Badger Herald, Jan. 25.

UW-Parkside's community involvement has earned it a special designation from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

"Comparative lit dept.'s future reads unclear," Daily Cardinal, Jan. 25.

UW-Madison officials said the campus could phase out its Comparative Literature department because it lacks the necessary resources to replace faculty.

"UW-L seeking input on stadium design," La Crosse Tribune, Jan. 25.

UW-La Crosse held a listening session to hear public suggestions about how to improve the design of the campus's soon-to-be-constructed stadium.

State

"GOP state senators propose income tax cut, other initiatives," Associated Press, Jan. 24.

A set of economic-development proposals includes support for the NanoSTEM initiative of UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stout and Chippewa Valley Technical College; proposals from Gov. Jim Doyle are likely to include a partnership with the university to support entrepreneurs.

"Grant debt unfair to students," Editorial, Daily Cardinal, Jan. 25.

An editorial strongly opposing a legislative proposal that would require students who receive financial aid grants to repay any money they receive if they do not meet certain academic standards.
