UW researchers are investigating more ways to create ethanol, which they say can help ease the country's dependence on foreign oil as an energy resource.

State

"Real world challenges," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 24.

The Corporation for Enterprise Development's recent report card of Wisconsin's economy provides a positive argument for the development of university research, particularly the expansion of UW-Milwaukee's research capacity, and the spin-off companies such research creates.

"2-state tuition pact in jeopardy," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 24.

The Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board said the state favors maintaining the existing reciprocity agreement between the University of Minnesota and the UW System because the current arrangement increases affordable higher education options for Wisconsin students.

"Study: Wisconsin's technical colleges graduating more minority students," Racine Journal Times, Jan. 24.

A Wisconsin Technical College System study reports that technical colleges have doubled the number of minority graduates in the last five years; the report cautions that the state must keep higher education affordable.

"Discovery Farms researches environmental issues," Agri News, Jan. 23.

Discovery Farms, a facility that is part of UW-Madison and UW-Extension, examines how farming and land-use practices contribute to water-quality degradation.

National

"Bush renews call for lawmakers to curb earmarks and promises a deficit-cutting budget," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 24.

In his State of the Union Address, President Bush supported a reduction in federal earmarks, more than $2 billion of which went to 700 colleges in 2003; the address alluded to biosciences research, but did not include remarks on federal financial aid or funds for science research, as in previous years.
