UW System admissions officials hear from Wisconsin students and their families that they want UW campuses to consider more than just grades and test scores when deciding whether to admit applicants; the university intends to begin using a comprehensive admissions policy.

On Campus

"System president likes UW-Stout polytechnic idea," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Jan. 10.

UW-Stout could create a distinct brand for itself with a designation as a polytechnic institution that offers career-focused programs in the arts, engineering, education and other fields; UW System President Kevin P. Reilly spoke to a group of faculty interested in stepping up collaborative research efforts.

"UWSP honors advocate," Stevens Point Journal, Jan. 10.

UW-Stevens Point honors one of its graduates with the UW System's Outstanding Women of Color Award.

"UW Colleges refocus their mission," Column, Wausau Daily Herald, Jan. 10.

UW-Marathon County Dean Jim Veninga details an enhanced mission for the UW Colleges, which seek to provide even greater access to Wisconsin residents and to produce more four-year college degree-holders.

"UWM plays chicago-style politics," Column, Milwaukee Magazine, Jan. 10.

A column questioning how real-estate developments at UWM might impact the university's mission.

"Auditorium proposal at UW-Fox necessary," Letter to the Editor, Appleton Post-Crescent, Jan. 10.

A UW-Fox Valley student writes that adequate university facilities are as important as other public services, such as roads and hospitals.

State

"31 Doyle appointments confirmed," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 10.

The state Senate confirmed eight members of the UW System Board of Regents; the confirmations had been blocked for two years.

"Economist: Brain power is equal to earning potential," Appleton Post-Crescent, Jan. 10.

Wisconsin must do more to tie education to a 21st-century work force and knowledge economy, according to economist David Ward.

"Cows produce lots of money, too," Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter, Jan. 10.

Representatives from UW-Madison and UW-Extension detailed how dairy cows contribute much to Wisconsin's economy; the on-farm production and sale of milk accounts for $125 million in revenue for Manitowoc County.
