A state panel studying the use of affirmative action in Wisconsin could focus on practices used in college admissions.

"Credit agreement with tech schools, four-year colleges Grade A move," Editorial, Oshkosh Northwestern, Dec. 19.

By creating new ways for students to earn college degrees, UW campuses and technical colleges are brightening the future for Wisconsin's work force.

On Campus

"Access denied: Colleges don't have to share grades with parents," La Crosse Tribune, Dec. 19.

Under federal law, parents who want to see the grades of their children in college must first have permission from those students.

"Rules change at Superior, unsure consequences," Wisconsin Public Radio, Dec. 18.

Following a Board of Regents' rule change that prevents discrimination but allows student groups to limit their membership, a committee of the student government at UW-Superior has recommended reinstating a Christian student organization.

"University gets 18 gift horses this year," River Falls Journal, Dec. 19.

The equine program at UW-River Falls operates using mostly animals that were donated to the university.

"Old Main, Erlanson to see upgrades," Superior Daily Telegram, Dec. 19.

Some UW-Superior administrative offices will be temporarily moved over the winter break to allow for renovations.

State

Providing tuition assistance to Wisconsin residents who want to earn college degrees could increase the state's tax base and grow job opportunities.

A writer questions whether Wisconsin has enough jobs to support a larger college-educated work force.

The idea of offering free college tuition to Wisconsin residents raises questions, but deserves further investigation.

"Doyle: Take new look at civil unions," Capital Times, Dec. 17.

The University of Kentucky is offering domestic-partner benefits despite that state's constitutional amendment preventing same-sex marriage, which is identical to the amendment recently passed in Wisconsin.

National

"Colleges zero in on students' majors," Associated Press, Dec. 19.

UW-Madison joins other colleges across the country in encouraging students to choose a major and graduate in a timely way.
