UW System officials will assess how different options for UW-Waukesha, including a "university center" model and a merger with UW-Milwaukee, will affect higher education in Southeastern Wisconsin before making a decision about the future of the freshman-sophomore college.

Joe Gow, one of the five finalists for Chancellor at UW-La Crosse, said he would interact heavily with members of the campus community; Gow also praised the campus's proposed Growth and Access Agenda and vowed to increase diversity on campus.

The University of Wisconsin University Committee, the executive committee of the UW-Madison Faculty Senate, issued a statement opposing an upcoming Wisconsin ballot referendum on the grounds that it would severely hinder recruiting efforts for new faculty.

UW-Marathon County Dean Jim Veninga said a partnership between his campus and Northcentral Technical College will allow students to complete an associate degree, exemplifying the two institutions' commitment to attracting adult students.

UW-Oshkosh's College of Business will use a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration to grow the region's economy by working with existing intellectual property to develop new businesses.

State

"$6,000 tax deduction for tuition?" Capital Times, Oct. 25.

Gov. Jim Doyle introduced a proposal to increase the amount of college tuition parents can deduct from their income taxes to $6,000; he also promised a "significant" increase in financial aid if re-elected.

Comparing statistical levels of support for the UW System when each of the political parties controlled the state legislature, a UW-Madison professor concludes that the university consistently receives more funding and support under Democrat-controlled legislatures.

National

"College fund raising goals hit $4 billion mark; local goals not as lofty," Associated Press, Oct. 26.

As colleges nationwide greatly increase fund-raising goals, UW-La Crosse plans to embark on a $45 million campaign for a new academic building and stadium, as well as for scholarships and research grants.
