An editorial strongly favoring a UW-La Crosse pilot program that will use additional revenue to grow student enrollment and add faculty and staff.

"Loss of jobs equals urgency," Editorial, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Sept. 30.

An editorial encouraging UW-Madison to improve its efforts to create new companies from university research, a move that can strengthen Wisconsin's economy overall.

"Facing tough odds, three head to UWM," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Oct. 1.

Former UW-Madison Dean of Student Affairs Joseph Kaufman, who was with the university during the 1960s and subsequently helped form the Peace Corps, passed away last week.

UW-River Falls Provost Charles Hurt said the campus briefly evacuated the building as a precaution after receiving what could have been a serious threat to students and staff.

State

Organizers, UW-River Falls staff among them, hope to bring residents from both sides of the St. Croix river together for a festival celebrating and teaching about music, poetry and nature.

National

The state of Oregon is proposing a plan to cover more college costs for low- and lower-middle income students.

"Universities that do background checks should apply them to all new hires, speaker says," Chronicle of Higher Education, Oct. 2.

More consistently applying background-check policies could make them less contentious among those who work for colleges and universities.
