An editorial suggesting a merger of the Wisconsin Technical College System and the UW Colleges would create greater educational opportunity for Wisconsin's citizens.
On Campus
"UW's admissions policy doesn't slight Wisconsin students," Column, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Aug. 11.
UW-Madison Provost Patrick Farrell makes clear that Wisconsin's residents are not competing with non-resident students for admission to that campus.
"Official apologizes for mishandling Knights of Columbus announcement," Associated Press, Aug. 11.
UW-Madison officials said points of disagreement were unclear as the campus seeks to negotiate ways to appropriately recognize a student organization.

A host of county board supervisors from around Wisconsin said they think cutting their counties' UW-Extension budgets in protest of a UW-Madison hiring decision, as Ozaukee County's board did, would not be a good decision.
National
"Panel's report urges higher education shake-up," New York Times, Aug. 11.
The final report from a national panel on the future of public higher education suggests that colleges must control costs, and called for standardized testing, federal accountability measures, and substantial Pell Grant increases.
"Sudan-divestment policy adopted by U. System of Maryland," Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 11.
The University of Maryland System directs fund managers not to invest in companies that conduct business in Sudan.
