UW System President Kevin Reilly said one of the university's main objectives in the Growth Agenda for Wisconsin is to increase the number of four-year college degree holders in the state to strengthen Wisconsin's economy.

"WiSys to distribute $1 million in research funds," Wisconsin Technology Network, June 19.

The WiSys Technology Advancement Grant is designed to help UW campuses expand research capacities and attract federal dollars to Wisconsin.

On Campus

"UW-Oshkosh to offer fire and emergency management classes," Wisconsin Public Radio, June 19.

UW-Oshkosh's recently announced Fire and Emergency Management degree program will focus on management, communication and leadership skills.

"UW-Rock hires first engineering faculty member," Janesville Gazette, June 20.

UW-Rock County announced the hiring of the first of two faculty members being recruited to teach in the Rock County Engineering Program; UW-Platteville will add another full-time faculty member to the program as enrollment increases.

"UW Marathon County dorms calm before storm," Wausau Daily Herald, June 15.

Most of UW-Marathon County's students have left for the summer, but the campus's residence halls will soon be buzzing with activity; the UW Colleges campus will use the residence halls to house camp participants, among other groups.

"Shakespearean play helps inmates relate to characters, crime," Wisconsin Public Radio, June 19.

A UW-Parkside professor entering his second year as director of the Racine Correctional Institution's presentation of a Shakespearean play said he believes enabling inmates to act out such powerful roles allows them to express their humanity in unique ways.

"Missing student found dead in lake," Wisconsin State Journal, June 20.

The body of Kenji Ohmi, a UW-Madison student missing since January, was found in Lake Mendota Monday afternoon.

"Private dorm at UW to have religious focus," Wisconsin State Journal, June 20.

UW-Madison officials said they support the off-campus Pres House constructing a private faith-based residence hall, noting how such an option benefits students who want to experience a large public university, but also want a religion-centered living environment.

National

"States are flush with cash, but colleges face competition for the money," Chronicle of Higher Education, June 23.

Officials from many states with projected budget surpluses, which does not include Wisconsin, said they will use a portion of their extra revenue to benefit higher education; for example, California used a portion of the state's budget surplus to "buy out" an 8 percent tuition increase for students at the University of California and California State University systems.

"Number of students transferring from community colleges to elite institutions plunges," Chronicle of Higher Education, June 20.

Researchers have found that only about 8 percent of students enrolled at "elite" public colleges and universities transferred from two-year institutions; the amount decreases to fewer than 1 percent at private colleges and universities of the same stature.
