"State is better off with diverse university system, " Column, Racine Journal Times, June 13.

State Rep. Robert Turner writes in strong support of a UW System admissions approach that would take into account factors other than grades and test scores when determining which applicants should be admitted to a UW System campus.

The UW System Board of Regents announced some of the university's administrators would receive pay raises of 2 and 2.3 percent over the next 12 months; UW-Madison Chancellor John Wiley said he will return his raises in the form of donations to the university.

UW-Parkside Chancellor Jack Keating said despite the recent resident tuition increases at UW System campuses, the university's tuition remains comparatively lower that that of many of its peer university systems.

UW System Board of Regents President David Walsh said Regents need to ensure fair treatment before deciding how to proceed on a request by UW-Madison administrator Paul Barrows to appear before the Board's personnel committee to address a letter of counsel he received from Provost Patrick Farrell.

UW-Oshkosh already has 50 students ready to enroll in the inaugural semester of its bachelor's degree program in fire and emergency response management, a program the Board of Regents just approved to begin this fall.

Some legal experts said the prosecution of Georgia Thompson, a state employee who was convicted of fraud earlier this week, was meant to send a message to state employees with large amounts of discretion not to let personal or political aspirations alter their decision making.
