UW System officials said the Wisconsin Covenant Gov. Jim Doyle proposed in his State of the State Address will require partnerships and support from legislators if it is to be successful.

On Campus

"Driving for diversity," Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, Jan. 28.

In a visit to UW-Eau Claire, chancellor finalist Brian Levin-Stankevich touted the importance of campus and curricular diversity for eventual student success.

"Demoted dean has not shown up to teach classes," Associated Press, Jan. 27.

UW-Whitewater officials say former dean and current professor Lee Jones has been on sick-leave since the semester started and has therefore not shown up to teach his classes. Per UW System terms for sick-leave, Jones has provided a doctor's note.

"'Vision' enhances UWSP's role to improve region's economy," Column, Stevens Point Journal, Jan. 27.

In this column, UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Linda Bunnell emphasizes the importance of increasing the number of baccalaureate degree-holders in Wisconsin.

"UW-Platteville program attracts out-of-state students," WMTV, Jan. 30.

UW-Platteville's tri-state initiative, in which certain out-of-state students qualify for in-state tuition at the campus, is popular among both students who benefit from lower tuition costs and campus officials, who are enjoying an enrollment growth.

"Debate continues over UW-Waukesha's future," Business Journal of Milwaukee, Jan. 27.

A steering group of UW officials investigating the educational needs of the Waukesha area will soon report on the information gathered so far.

"UW-Fox offers option to high college costs," Letter to the Editor, Appleton Post-Crescent, Jan. 30.

Lauding the lower price, high value and personalized attention, UW-Fox Valley Dean Jim Perry writes in to promote his campus for students trying to decide where to pursue higher education.

"Campus changes in store," Green Bay Press-Gazette, Jan. 29.

UW-Green Bay officials hope a new campus master plan will increase student enrollment by nearly 2,000 students during the next six years.

"UW is big cog in Mexico-dairy link," Letter to the Editor, Capital Times, Jan. 28.

In a letter to the editor, an associate dean and professor in the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences discusses the campus' crucial role in bringing together the state's dairy farmers and Mexico to maximize the potential benefits for both.

State

"State raises student aid," Badger Herald, Jan. 30.

Students, legislators and UW System officials alike expressed happiness with a bill that would, if approved by Gov. Doyle, raise the maximum award for Wisconsin higher-education grants in an effort to make college more affordable for students from lower-income families.

"Tech college tax power now faces its reform hour," Editorial, Oshkosh Northwestern, Jan. 30.

An editorial proposing that any governing board with the power to levy taxes, like the ones in control of Wisconsin's technical colleges, be elected by the public.

National

"Promoting liberal education," Inside Higher Ed., Jan. 30.

Academic leaders meeting in Washington cited the importance of a liberal education as the global economy continues to change.
