State of the State

"Doyle touts 'affordability agenda'," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 18.

Among other items in his State of the State address, Gov. Jim Doyle included the proposed "Wisconsin Covenant," a financial aid package under which high school students who maintain a B average and take challenging classes would be guaranteed financial assistance at a UW System campus.

An editorial arguing that a financial aid pledge program could be the right way to help public universities fulfill the needs of students.

On Campus

"Perry among chancellor finalists," Appleton Post-Crescent, Jan. 18.

UW-Fox Valley Dean and CEO Jim Perry, one of the finalists for chancellor at UW-Eau Claire, said he would welcome the opportunity to take a job outside of his current campus, but would be happy to remain at UW-Fox Valley as well.

"UW-Waukesha dean embraces community," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 18.

Citing the importance of community involvement in higher education, UW-Waukesha Dean Patrick Schmitt is planning the formation of a community advisory board to provide feedback about campus operations.

"UW-Washington County workshops cater to non-profits," Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 14.

The attendance at UW-Washington County's workshops to train non-profit leaders and employees about how to expand their organizations has exceeded expectations.

"UW-Oshkosh chancellor calls for minimum wage increase," Oshkosh Northwestern, Jan. 18.

UW-Oshkosh Chancellor Richard Wells called for an increase in minumum wage, citing that even when people work full-time for the current minimum, they are still living below the poverty line.

State

"Doyle pushes on stem cells," Capital Times, Jan. 16.

Governor Jim Doyle said he will call for the state's Department of Commerce to reserve $5 million for stem-cell research to achieve his goal of having Wisconsin capture 10 percent of the stem-cell research market by 2015.

National

"State support for higher education has 'no correlation' with college quality, report says," Chronicle of Higher Education, Jan. 18.

A National Center for Higher Education Management Systems report says financial support from the government has little relation to the success of the universities that receive state funding.
